A very happy new year to all of our readers. Microsoft have started 2012 by celebrating the demise of Internet Explorer 6 by baking a cake!
Less than 1% of US and UK internet surfers now use the outdated internet browser. Internet Explorer 6 was easily voted the worst browser to ever be released by any of the internet giants out there, and Microsoft will be delighted to see the back of it.
However, over at Google’s headquarters, the mood was less cheerful as the search engine giant has had to downgrade its own browser Chrome, after it turned out that a marketing campaign had paid bloggers to promote a video.
Google distanced itself from the campaign and has blamed a third-party marketing firm Essence Digital.
“Google never approved a sponsored-post campaign. They only agreed to buy online video ads. Google have consistently avoided paid postings to promote their products, because in their view these kind of promotions are not transparent or in the best interests of users.
We apologise to Google who clearly didn’t authorise this.”
The story took the SEO world by storm, as a little bit of Google’s shine was tarnished by events, although while Google dropped “chrome” from its search results “browser”, however everyone at Skyline was a little amused that Googled then put “News articles” at the top of the search results, which given the whole incident put the Chrome story at the very top!

This week, we are looking at the “alternative” to SEO – Google AdWords.
Google has announced that its latest version of AdWords – AdWords Express has now been made available to all UK advertisers. Google had released the service back in late July, as an assistance to local businesses to get more traffic to their Places pages and also to increase site traffic too – of course at their own expense and Googles increased profit line!
After taking the basic setup steps – AdWords will manage the account for you. The setup process will take you around 10 minutes, although may take longer if you have to come up with an original text ad and if you need to setup your Google Places account too.
A handy feature about AdWords Express, is that it will give you an estimated monthly budget. The budget will take into account the local competition levels, estimated number of clicks and also of course how much Google thinks it will be able to get out of you too!
Having had our share of AdWords accounts, we must stress that in the world of SEO, an AdWords campaign is always a short-term SEO solution, as the costs can escalate and as soon as your budget is used up, your Google presence is gone.
SEO can offer you the proper solution – An Internet Marketing or Online Marketing campaign known as SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) will mean you can keep that targeted traffic coming through to your site 24 hours a day, and not cost you a penny when someone clicks. We are not going to lie to you – this does require financial and time commitment to get results, but if you are thinking long term for your business, then we have the right SEO solution for you.

Google is set to take over a seven-storey building in east London next year as the area grows further as the “start-up” scene in London. Coupled with the 2012 Olympics, this is a new initiative from Google and will not be an official office. The London HQ for Google will remain in recently moved trendy Soho.
David Singleton, Google UK Engineering Director said:
“We announced our involvement in the Tech City project last year, and we’ve been working hard to make this vision a reality…”
“…finding a suitable building is the first major step, and we hope to announce more details about the organisations we’ll work with and how they will use the space in the coming months.”

Amazon has now shown the World its new tablet computer which will be called the “Kindle Fire”.
The device will cost £130, and will run an improved version of Google’s Android operating system.
The pricing and backup services bring this device into a competitive niche of its own, however it has also been criticised for the smaller 7″ screen compared to its competitors, such as Apples iPad.
The fact Amazon has had such success with the Kindle and reputation has grown over time, it is hoping to attract both new business and exisiting “upgrades” from the Kindle.
However it was also announced that a new Kindle product would also be launched, at a cheaper price point then the current devices, and builds further on Amazons “digital content” success.
